The “Bitcoin Legal Defense Fund” is intended to protect developers who face lawsuits and legal threats, and who are sometimes forced to cease their activity. According to the message, open source developers are particularly vulnerable, as they are often completely independent.
The fund is intended for developers of the Bitcoin network, but also of protocols annexes like the Lightning Network, or privacy projects related to cryptocurrency. It will help find and hire lawyers, pay legal fees and establish defense strategies. It will first be managed by a team of volunteers and lawyers, who will choose the organization’s priorities.

A Craig Wright trial as a first project
The press release explains that the first case processed will be one of the (many) court cases of Craig Wright. The creator of Bitcoin SV (BSV), who has claimed for years to be Satoshi Nakamoto, attacked Bitcoin (BTC) developers in February 2021.
The Bitcoin Legal Defense Fund will therefore take the lead and support the developers in question:
” [Le Fonds] will take charge of the coordination of the defense that exists in the context of the Tulip Trading lawsuit against certain Bitcoin developers for an alleged breach ofeur fiduciary duty. “
The developers are accused of not having allowed Craig Wright to recover funds that were stolen, and therefore of having failed in their duty. This is just one of many lawsuits the man has filed over the years, but Jack Dorsey seems decided. to start to put things in the way.
The CEO of Block indeed launched a lawsuit against Wright last April, so that it stops claiming to have rights to the whitepaper of Bitcoin. The saga has only just begun.
