Airbnb: payment in cryptocurrency possible in 2022?
For this new year, the Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky asked via his Twitter account what its users would like as new to the platform.
The result may seem surprising. In addition to requests for a clearer display of the price, or a loyalty program, users would like to be able to pay in cryptocurrency as a priority.
Got 4,000 suggestions. Here are the top 6:
1 – Crypto payments (top suggestion)
2 – Clear pricing displays
3 – Guest loyalty program
4 – Updated cleaning fees
5 – More long-term stays & discounts
6 – Better customer service

Currently, for a reservation, Airbnb accepts the following payment methods : Visa, MasterCard, Google Pay, PayPal and Apple Pay.
“The majority of respondents want to be able to pay in bitcoin (BTC) or other popular digital currencies when renting their next home or apartment on Airbnb,” said Brian Chesky.
In addition, the co-founder added that this potential payment option would not be limited to one or two cryptocurrencies. The latter indeed underlined that this suggestion included a variety of tokens.
Nevertheless, these statements remain only guesses and the Airbnb CEO has not confirmed the implementation of this innovation at this time.
Thereby, Brian Chesky remains unclear on this subject and only indicated that:
“Airbnb is already working on some of these new products and will consider other requests.”
Airbnb cautious about the implementation of innovation
It is interesting to note that Airbnb had already mentioned the integration of cryptocurrencies as a means of payment in 2020, during its preparation for an IPO.
“Our future success will also depend on our ability to adapt to emerging technologies, such as tokenization, cryptocurrencies, new authentication technologies, such as biometrics, distributed ledger and blockchain technologies, artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality; and cloud technologies, ”said Brian Chesky.
Even if the firm had conceded that failures were possible when implementing technical innovations, above all, she remains enthusiastic about the idea of cryptocurrencies.
However, his approach remains cautious and society prefers to move forward ” slowly but surely “.
